Special guests Mitchell and Alexandra Troop will join us at the Heritage Log Cabins at Longwoods Road Conservation Area for a night of moths and art. During this night time event (9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.) guests will get to ‘meet’ some nocturnal pollinators and create glow in the dark paintings based on the moths we find!
Mothing is when certain types of lights are turned on at night outdoors to attract moths and other nocturnal insects. The flying insects land on a white sheet hung near the lights and can be observed. Mothing is done in studies to learn the species composition in different areas.
While moths are coming to the lights and being observed by visitors, guests are invited to take part in a glow-in-the-dark painting exercise focused on these neat nocturnal pollinators.
Through the night, the visitors would be able to make art inside and look at the moths outside, going back and forth between the two activities.
Participants will need:
– a flashlight
– closed toe walking shoes
– wear light layers that can get paint on them
Art supplies will be provided.
Suggested items:
– a buddy to make the night special
