Message:
A Special Weather Statement has been issued by Environment Canada. It advises that the region could see heavy rainfall beginning this evening and lasting through Thursday morning. Rainfall amounts of 30 to 50 mm are predicted, with isolated amounts of up to 100 mm in some locations due to embedded thunderstorms. Rainfall Warnings could be issued later today as forecasts evolve.
There have been heavy rains over the last few weeks and the ground is still somewhat saturated. The Thames River is still slightly up due to the recent rains. Local watercourses, ditches, creeks and streams have mostly fallen back to normal water levels. However, these local watercourses may respond quickly to this predicted rain.
The amount of rain in the forecasts could create ponding, areas of standing water and localized flooding. This rain will also cause our smaller local watercourses to rise and some could spill their banks. If the higher rainfall amounts appear, the LTVCA may need to operate the McGregor Creek Diversion Channel at Chatham and is prepared to do so. It is too early to determine any potential impacts to Thames River water levels.
People should take extra caution and avoid the river, ditches, and streams. The combination of slippery banks, and fast-moving water can be dangerous. Standing water can also present its own unseen hazards. Children, pets and livestock should be kept away from the water. As water levels rise, it is not safe to take shelter along riverbanks or in low-lying areas that are prone to flooding.
Officials will continue to monitor the situation and update this advisory as necessary.
This message will be in effect until July 14th, 2023.
