Message:
The Strong Wind Warning issued by Environment Canada’s Marine Forecast remains in effect for Lake Erie due to predicted strong winds this evening. Forecasted wind speeds on both Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair have been upgraded. North winds on Lake St. Clair are forecasted to reach 35 km/hr this evening with gusts over 50 km/hr. North winds on Lake Erie are forecasted to reach 30 km/hr this evening with gusts over 45 km/hr. Winds would be stronger over the open water. These winds could be expected to raise static water levels (i.e. before waves) in the area of Lighthouse Cove. Waves could reach 0.5 m on Lake St. Clair. Any waves will add on to the already record high water levels. The Special Weather Statement for heavy rains was dropped this morning.
Due to the high lake levels on Lake St. Clair and predicted wind and wave action, there is a risk of additional flooding this evening in the community of Lighthouse Cove. There is also an increased risk of shoreline erosion and damage to shoreline protection works in the areas. On Lake Erie, the winds are forecasted to be offshore so there is less risk. However, the strong winds and wave action could cause flooding on the bay side Erieau. Residents in these areas should be prepared, pay attention to changing weather forecasts and local conditions.
People should take extra caution and avoid the shoreline should conditions get rough. The waves can be strong and the shoreline slippery. There could also be hazardous debris within the waves and water which could be thrown onto the shoreline. Standing water can also present unseen hazards. Children and animals should be kept away from the water.
Officials will continue to monitor the situation and update this advisory if necessary.
This message will be in effect until June 21st, 2019.
