Flooding has just started along Erie Shore Drive in Chatham-Kent. Standing water is building up on properties and water is flowing across the roadway at one location.
There are various weather messages related to the winds that have been issued by Environment Canada, including a Wind Warning, and a Gale Warning and Squall Warning from the Marine Forecast. The Wind Warning is calling for strong winds gusting to 90 km/hr this afternoon and early this evening. Flooding in the area is predicted to increase with the worst of it lasting from early to mid-afternoon. Flooding is predicted to last until the winds shift to the west, which most forecasts are calling for late this afternoon or early this evening. If winds don’t shift far enough west, flooding could continue into the overnight.
The general public is being asked to avoid the area to ensure that emergency services can access the area if required. The waves on the lakes can be strong, and the shoreline slippery. There could also be hazardous debris within the waves and water which could be thrown onto the shoreline. Standing water can also present unseen hazards. Children especially should be kept away from the water.
The previously issued Flood Watch remains in effect for other shoreline areas.
