Message:
There is currently a Special Weather Statement in effect from Environment and Climate Change Canada due to the possibility of significant rainfall amounts. It suggests total rainfall amounts of 25 to 50 mm could be expected by Tuesday morning, with locally higher amounts possible due to thunderstorms. Various other forecasts suggest 20 to 40 mm could be seen by noon on Tuesday, with the higher amounts generally further east in the watershed. The rain is expected to end later on Tuesday as the cold front moves through.
The watershed has been unusually dry over the last few months and the ground will be able to absorb quite a bit of the rain. If only the lower rainfall amounts appear, the watershed will easily be able to handle the rain without flooding on our smaller local watercourses. However, if the higher rainfall amounts appear, some of the smaller local watercourses could rise up and spill their banks. It is possible that enough rain could appear that the LTVCA would have to operate the McGregor Creek Diversion Channel and is prepared to do so if necessary. With the large rainfall amounts and possibility of thunderstorms there could also be localized flooding and ponding issues, especially in urbanized areas.
People should take caution and avoid the river, ditches, and streams. The combination of slippery banks and fast-moving water can be dangerous. Standing water can also present its own unseen hazards. Children, pets and livestock should be kept away from the water.
Officials will continue to monitor the situation and update this advisory as necessary.
This message will be in effect until June 8th, 2022.
