Highlights:
• Freezing Rain Warning in effect due to significant amounts of freezing rain in the forecast.
• Over 20 mm of mixed precipitation in the forecast
• Ponding and localized flooding is possible
• Local watercourses will rise and some could spill their banks.
Message:
There is currently a Freezing Rain Warning in effect from Environment and Climate Change Canada due to significant amounts of freezing rain in the forecast. A prolonged period of precipitation is predicted for today, beginning as snow this morning and changing over to mixed precipitation, including freezing rain, in the afternoon and evening. Forecasts are predicting at least 20 mm rain, with some forecasts calling for as much as 40 mm of total precipitation. The Freezing Rain Warning suggests ice accretion of 5 to 10 mm is possible. Temperatures are predicted to remain right around the freezing point into Thursday morning.
Given the forecast of mixed precipitation and temperatures right around the freezing point for the next 24 hours, it is very difficult to predict the flooding potential. The 20 mm of rain predicted would be significant at this time of year if it was all rain. Depending on the amount and timing, the freezing rain could help or worsen the flooding situation. With the possibility of even higher rainfall amounts, some amount of ponding and localized flooding should be expected. On our smaller local watercourses, water levels should be expected to rise and some could spill their banks into adjacent low-lying areas. If the higher rainfall amounts appear, it is possible that McGregor Creek in Chatham could rise enough that the LTVCA would have to operate the McGregor Creek Diversion Channel and is prepared to do so if necessary. Accumulating ice could block drainage outlets leading to further drainage problems. Residents should pay attention to local conditions and be prepared.
It is too early at this time to predict what kind of impacts this event may have on Thames River water levels.
People should take caution and avoid the river, ditches, and streams. With the freezing rain and predicted ice accumulation, conditions will be very slippery and fast-moving cold water can be dangerous. Standing water can also present its own unseen hazards. Children, pets and livestock should be kept away from the water.
Officials will continue to monitor the situation and update this advisory as necessary.
This message will be in effect until February 24th, 2023.
