Tree Planting Program with the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority

Do you want to plant trees on your property in Southwestern Ontario between London and Wheatley? The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority sells low-cost native tree seedlings and provides funding for tree planting projects over 1 acre in size.

In a given year, the LTVCA is responsible for planting as many as 100,000 trees within its boundaries between London and Wheatley. However, itโ€™s not nearly enough!

We need your help.
Landowners have planted trees for windbreaks, wildlife corridors, woodlots, living snow fences, or simply to enhance their property. If you own property within the Lower Thames Valley watershed, you might be eligible for funding for trees to be planted by yourself or by our staff.

We have various native Carolinian species, conifers, deciduous, and wildlife shrubs. We also have many resources to help you pick the right tree for the soil types on your property, and guide you on how to successfully plant your trees.

Note that there is NO warranty on seedlings purchased through this program.

Seedling Program

Are you a rural landowner or have a larger property and want to plant 50 trees or more? We support large scale tree planting projects that many use for windbreaks, wildlife corridors, woodlots, living snow fences, or those who simply want to be a part of reforesting Southwestern Ontario.

Seedling orders are now OPEN for 2026!

Funding is available for tree planting projects over 1 acre in size or approximately 500 trees.

Hereโ€™s what you need to know about planting a large quantity of trees on your property:

A site visit is required to ensure your property is suitable

The deadline for placing seedlings orders is March 1st

All tree species must be ordered in multiples of ten with a minimum order of 50

Large projects may be planted by LTVCA staff at a cost of $1.00 by machine or $1.50 by hand

Preparation and maintenance of a project is required by landowner

Trees should be planted 7.5โ€ฒ x 7.5โ€ฒ to allow ongoing maintenance to ensure best chance of success

*Site preparation should commence in the Fall prior to the Spring planting. Rototilling, pre-emergent, and glyphosate treatment is recommended. The first three years are key to successful tree seedling survival.

Seedling Planting Doโ€™s and Donโ€™ts

  • NDo plant the trees as soon as possible after picking them up.
  • NDo spray or mist trees if they look like they are drying out.
  • NDo keep the trees in bags and in shade whenever possible when planting.
  • NDo eliminate air pockets by tamping the soil down around the tree, preferably with your heel, after planting.
  • NDo store in a cool and dry place until ready to plant
  • MDonโ€™t store trees for more than two days.
  • M Donโ€™t soak trees in water as this drowns the trees.
  • MDonโ€™t lay the trees out and then go back to plant later.
