About the Ska-Nah-Doht Village

Ska-Nah-Doht, from the Oneida language meaning โ€˜a village stands again,โ€™ is a recreation of a longhouse village reflective of those lived in by the Haudenosaunee (People of the Longhouse) about 1,000 years ago. The Haudenosaunee are just one of the many Indigenous communities that call this place home. The Village opened in 1973 and is located in the natural surroundings of Longwoods Road Conservation Area.

Find your way through the palisade maze. Then enter a longhouse and imagine cooking supper in a clay pot next to a roaring fire. Pretend to grind corn into flour using a wooden mortar and pestle. Explore the lookout and other tools of daily life like fish trap, hide stretching racks, and more!

Ska-Nah-Doht Village and Museum – 50 Years On!

In 2023, Ska-Nah-Doht Village celebrated it’s 50th birthday. The Curator spoke about the history of the Ska-Nah-Doht, as well as on-going projects at the History Symposium in 2024.

About the Ska-Nah-Doht Museum

The Ska-Nah-Doht Museum offers hands-on exhibits focused on Indigenous culture. Displays feature cultural belongings from the archaeological excavation that took place at two archaeological sites within the conservation area. The evidence confirms these sites to be approximately 1000 years old (800 to 1200 CE), a perfect compliment to the Ska-Nah-Doht Village.

As a result of community consultation, and direct input from leaders from our local Indigenous communities, we are working to revitalize our indoor space! Working with the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Foundation, the LTVCA has been undertaking a number of construction and renovation projects at Ska-Nah-Doht Museum.ย

The Ska-Nah-Doht Museum and the Turtle Trail Gift Shop are located in the Longwoods Resource Centre.
