Message:

A weather system bringing heavy rains and thunderstorms has been passing through the region today. Much of the watershed received around 50 mm of rain. However, some areas have seen substantially more. One weather station has recorded 85 mm. The last of the system should be passing out of the region over the next few hours. The watershed has been quite dry over the last few weeks and should absorb some of this rain. However, this is a large amount of rain, and the watershed should be expected to respond to the rain.

Areas of ponding, standing water and localized flooding should be expected around the watershed. Smaller watercourses, ditches and streams should be expected to rise, and some may spill their banks into adjacent low-lying areas. The LTVCA may need to operate the McGregor Creek Diversion.

The Thames River is currently flowing relatively low for this time of the year. The river should be expected to respond to the rain and will rise as well. However, at this time, the river is expected to remain within its banks.

People should take extra caution and avoid local waterways that are running high. The combination of slippery banks and fast-moving water can be dangerous. Standing water can also present its own unseen hazards. Children, pets, and livestock should be kept away from the water.

Officials will continue to monitor the situation and update this advisory as necessary.
