Watershed Condition Statement – Flood Outlook – Smaller watercourses – April 4, 2026 – 9:00 AM

by | Apr 4, 2026 | Flood Notices

Highlights:

  • Rain and thunderstorms expected today, most of it late this afternoon and this evening.
  • Ponding, standing water, and localized flooding could be expected around the watershed.
  • Smaller watercourses could rise and some could spill their banks into adjacent low-lying areas.

Message:

Weather forecasts for today are calling for rain and thunderstorms. The region already saw some rain earlier this morning, with more expected later today. Weather forecasts are calling for 15-25 mm of rain today, with the possibility of localized higher amounts due to thunderstorms. Most of this rain is expected late this afternoon and this evening. Given the recent rain and the lack of ground cover at this time of the year, much of this rain would be expected to run off into the region’s watercourses.

Thunderstorms and heavy rains could lead to ponding, standing water and localized flooding. Based on the forecasted amount of rain, smaller watercourses in the region could be expected to rise, and some may spill their banks into adjacent low-lying areas. Depending on the rainfall received, the LTVCA may need to operate the McGregor Creek Diversion Channel in Chatham.

The Thames River is currently running somewhat higher than usual due to recent rains. Given the current forecasts and that much of the rain may come as isolated thunderstorms, it is too early to tell whether the rain would have a significant impact on water levels in the Thames River.

People should take extra caution and avoid local waterways that are running high. The combination of slippery banks and fast-moving cold water can be dangerous. Standing water can also present its own unseen hazards. Children, pets, and livestock should be kept away from the water.

Officials will continue to monitor the situation and update this message as necessary.

This message will be in effect until April 6th.
